Women Urged to Act Now in Preparation for 2029 Local Elections

See Her Elected are urging women to act now in preparation for the next local elections with the launch of its new initiative: “Top 50 Things You Can Do Between Now and the Local Elections 2029.” With approximately 50 months to go See Her Elected will host two free interactive online workshops this month for women who would like to learn more. Facilitated by political strategist and former journalist Kathleen O’Meara, these sessions will introduce participants to the full list of 50 actions, offering step-by-step insights into how to build their profile and other practical skills. Designed to meet the needs of women there will be an evening session 8pm Monday 26th of May or at 1pm lunchtime Tuesday 27th May.

Bookings for the workshops are now open via the SHE Academy.

"This isn’t just a checklist—it’s a roadmap,” said Dr. Michelle Maher, SHE Programme Manager. “We know that running for election can feel overwhelming therefore the best preparation is to start now. These 50 steps break it down into manageable actions you can start today. Your journey to 2029 starts now.”

CEO of Longford Women’s Link Tara Farrell has drawn attention to the local election timeline. “Almost twelve months have passed since the 2024 elections. We are already preparing for 2029 and encourage every woman with ambition to be elected to her local council to reach out to SHE.”

SHE’s mission is to increase the number of women in local politics, particularly those in underrepresented rural areas. With women currently making up approximately 27% of elected representatives nationally with much lower in many rural counties, the 2029 local elections represent a crucial opportunity for meaningful change.
Workshops with SHE run throughout the year via a dedicated training portal; SHE Academy. The online sessions are designed to complement the Guidebook to Local Elections, first published in 2021with an update due for release in late 2025.

Attendees to SHE workshops in the lead up to 2024 Local Elections reported a sense of empowerment and practical learning. A local election Campaign Manager Patrycja Lentowszczyk- Cichocka said “Michelle was so understanding of our current level of knowledge. She listened to all our questions and even delivered new topics when we raised questions like how to learn interview skills at a radio station. I have benefited immensely, not only through my political involvement but also as an individual. Very highly recommended”.

Whether you're seriously considering a run or simply curious about what it takes, the Top 50 Things initiative offers a starting point for every woman.
