Free Intro to Politics workshop in Carrick-on-Shannon

We are delighted to team up with Leitrim Library Service to run an Introduction to Politics in Ireland workshop for women on Monday, October 23rd in Carrick-on-Shannon.

This free workshop is aimed at women who would like to learn more about politics or indeed this workshop is ideal for any women who are new to the country and would like to learn more about how the Irish political system works.

Running in Carrick-on-Shannon Library on Monday, October 23rd from 11am to 1pm, this in-person workshop will examine national and local politics in Ireland, the role of the President, how the Constitution and Referendums work as well as learning more about the two houses of Government: the Seanad and Dáil. Participants will also learn more about the services and work of Leitrim County Council and how the local county council elections work as well as examining how the PR-STV voting system works in Ireland.

Women in County Leitrim can register for this free event in Carrick-on-Shannon Library for free by emailing carricklibrary@leitrimcoco.ie or contacting 071 9620789.

The workshop will be delivered by Dr Michelle Maher, Programme Manager with See Her Elected.

“See Her Elected wants to see more women, more people from ethnic minorities and more diversity in our county council chambers. SHE’s aim is to increase the numbers of women in local politics in rural counties such as Leitrim where there are only 3 female councillors out of 18. This Introduction to Politics workshop will deliver the building blocks of understanding how politics works in Ireland and help to understand how the voting system works in Ireland. It is about explaining how politics works in your county, where you fit in, and what you can do to have a say in what goes on. It is fantastic to see this drive and initiative by Leitrim County Council and Leitrim Library Services,” said Dr Maher.

SHE has also written Ireland's first Guidebook to Running in the 2024 Local Elections as part of a toolkit of practical supports for women inspired to run for election and join their campaign teams. The book is available to download free of charge on the website. Any woman who attends the Introduction to Politics course will also receive a Free copy of the book.

SHE is a collaboration between Longford Women’s Link and 5050North West and the programme is funded by the Department of Housing, Local Government and Heritage.
